About Mission Emission
Mission Emission allows you to calculate the environmental cost of your travel. The website also helps you offset your CO2 and NOx footprint by suggesting alternative journeys to your desired destination.
Every year travelling is becoming more and more affordable. Distance is no longer a barrier. However, there is another side of travelling.
Mission Emission is a project that aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of travelling.
Heads of state and other leaders affirmed their commitments to fight climate change at the One Planet Summit in Paris on December 12, on the second anniversary of the Paris Agreement.
Their calls for concrete action came as concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide reached their highest level in 800,000 years. CO2 emissions rose 60% between 1990 and 2014. In the last three years, global emissions had levelled off, but in 2017 they began to rise again.
We believe that actions need to be taken and it is up to every one of us to do something to help limit our carbon footprint.
This tool is our team’s contribution to the global community. We hope that you will find it useful and it will help you and your friends and family to be more aware of the environmental impact of travelling.
What problems does Mission Emission solve?
Our company is based in Sofia, Bulgaria which is one of the most polluted cities in Europe. Winter time usually is the worst time, very often the air is extremely dirty.
Last year I spent December and January in Scotland. After coming back to Sofia, I ended up arriving in a cold winter evening, the roads were jam-packed with cars. I was heading home to drop off my stuff and heading out to dinner.
The air was so dirty that I actually could see what I was breathing, it was crazy, it looked like one of those Sci-Fi movies where in the near future we have screwed the planet and people are fighting for water and food. I got so scared and it just stroked what were the emissions that I was generating while sitting in the taxi.
The next day I when I went back to the office, talked to some people about that, the day went by I forgot about it. A couple of weeks later I was discussing project ideas with one of our interns at the time.
He had a task to come up with ideas, to select one and develop an actual product design concept, the guy was struggling to come up with a valid idea that fit all requirements as I was sitting in the meeting with him I just thought of an emission calculator. Told him the idea he didn’t quite like it, he wanted to develop an application for bikers and so he did.
A few weeks later I discussed the emissions calculator with my partner Joro and we decided to look into it. That’s how the whole thing started.
